Save the saplings!

When: Fri, May 21, 2021 from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm Where: Snarestone Wharf, Quarry Lane, Snarestone, Leicestershire DE12 7DD Contact: Arran Jenkins Contact Email: volunteer@ashbycanal.org.uk Open Volunteer Spots: 27

A few years ago now we planted saplings all around the fence line at Ilott Wharf. Some of these are growing well but others don’t appear to be doing so good. Upon inspection and some preliminary work it has become evident that although many may not actually have survived there are others that with some careful attention can be saved.

There are a lot of brambles etc that have started to grow back around them and we need to clear this, carefully avoiding damaging the saplings as we do it and then attempt to save what we can once the area around them is clear. Where there are any that will need to be replaced we do have several growing wild around the site that we may be able to transplant to this area to fill the gaps that remain.

Volunteers will only require simple hand tools such as cutters/loppers and shears etc plus a small spade. If you have your own please bring them with you but there will be a small number available to use.

Where we will be working it is very easy to spread out and so anyone still with concerns relating to social distancing should have no problems in doing so and it will be a great opportunity to get outdoors and do something rewarding.

Please bring your own refreshments and wear suitable footwear etc.

Meeting at Snarestone Wharf for 10:00am then moving on to Ilott Wharf at 10:15am.
